ESC @ Community Library Work (City Library Leipzig)

Description:

The Leipziger Städtische Bibliotheken (LSB) are an important part of the city's cultural and educational landscape and provide centers for communication and information, reading promotion and education.

With a central library, 15 branches, a mobile library and an online-library, Leipzig Public Libraries (Leipziger Städtische Bibliotheken / LSB) are one of the largest public library systems in Germany, serving about 630,000 Leipzig residents.

LSB have 750,000 items in their collections including books for people of all ages, DVDs, e-books, e-magazines, autographs, art works, and musical scores. We offer a wide range of services, such as (early) literacy programs, computer and library training, and special services for immigrants. Each year 1,700 events – talks and lectures by authors, a variety of exhibitions, workshops, and discussions – take place in our branches. We collaborate with local organizations to provide educational and cultural offerings to the citizens of Leipzig.

The mission of LSB is to provide quality services, resources and lifelong learning opportunities through books and a variety of other formats to meet the informational, educational, cultural and recreational needs and interests of the city’s growing and changing population. LSB preserve and promote access to a broad range of human knowledge, information, and culture in a welcoming environment.

Tasks

The tasks are mainly shared in two areas of pedagogical library work: services for senior citizens and services for children (within the age of 12).

On the one hand, the volunteer will support the social library work for older people – in particular: our special delivery service for senior citizens and people with disabilities. Books and other material are delivered to the homebound by request. Together with two other colleagues, the volunteer realizes the daily routine of home-visits. Additionally, the volunteer takes part in different events for this target group, and helps with some tasks in the office to optimize work for seniors and implement some new concepts in this library service.

Library work with children is the other focus of this volunteer program. In our branches, we offer some leisure events for children (up to 12 years). These formats are public, commercial-free and free of charge. It's about crafting, playing and learning with the children from the neighborhood.

The aim of this program for the volunteer is to create and produce at least one event for both target groups in one of the 15 branches of the LSB.

Both mentioned library services are also supported by some colleagues from a municipal reintegration program for the long-term unemployed.
