ESC @ Lebenshilfe: residential group for people with mental disability

Description

The local Lebenshilfe association in Leipzig offers people with intellectual disabilities, their relatives, experts and friends the opportunity to become socially involved and to actively promote the self-determined participation of people with disabilities. For us, working on inclusion means involving people of different ages and nationalities in our work. In this way, we can follow our approach towards a tolerant and supportive society. To achieve this, we want to give young people the opportunity to gain experience in our organisation and abroad. At the same time, we want to open our non-profit organisation to intercultural experiences and bring new perspectives to our team.
We have three different residential groups for people with mental disabilities. The main one is Villa-Plagwitz, where you will be mainly involved. We have various facilities for the residents there, such as a gym or a cinema room.

Tasks:
You will mainly support the staff and residents in the afternoons by helping them with everyday activities, such as going shopping with them, playing games, accompanying them to doctor's appointments, sharing coffee breaks and talking to each other, or helping them with other hobbies, such as sports, choir, going for walks, etc. The residents are all adults and independent, so there is no personal care involved. Tasks will mainly involve assisting the residents with household tasks, such as telling them to do their washing etc. You will also be involved in planning and carrying out daily recreational activities for and with the residents, as well as organising special projects of longer duration. These could be excursions or workshops. It would also be nice if you could bring aspects of your own country into the work, such as music, games, sports, language, cooking or crafts. If there are any events, you may also be involved at the weekend. We are very open to your ideas!

The volunteering will start in November/ December 2024 and will end on 31.08.2025.

Selection criteria:

You should be open to get in touch with people from different ages, world views and religions, have an interest in working with people with disabilities and therefore be patient, caring and reliable. You should also be very communicative, and it would be nice if you have a basic knowledge of German. We also require a proof of measles vaccination and a criminal record from you.

We can not consider applicants from countries that require Visa.
